2025 Track and Field

Oakland Cubs Track and Field program provides opportunities for young athletes to participate in track and field competitions at local, regional or national levels. The 2025 Season start February 18, 2025.

Ages

The 8U session is for athletes NOT turning 9 in 2025. This is a beginner level class aimed at introducing the basics of Track and Field.

The Regular Session is for athlete ages 7 and older who want to learn technique around running and field events. Athletes need the ability to pay attention for the entirety of the practice.

When

The season begins mid-February. There is optional winter conditioning in January and early February. Track and Field runs from February through the first week of August for those going to the Junior Olympics.

Where

Practices

  • Weekday practices will be held at Oakland Tech unless otherwise noted
  • Sunday practices will be held at MLK track in Berkeley unless otherwise noted

Meets

  • Meets are held in the Bay Area, Sacramento Area, and Modesto Area. Regionals switch between the Bay Area and Fresno Area and Junior Olympics are at various locations in the USA.

Practices

Regular Session

  • Tuesday 6-730p: special events and Racewalk
  • Wednesday and Friday 6-7:30p: all athletes
  • Sunday 10a-12p: if no meet that week
  • Minimum commitment of 2 practices per week.

8U Session

  • Wednesday 5:30-6:15p: all athletes
  • Sunday 9:15-10a: if no meet that week

Meets

There are two types of meets that we take part in during the season: mini-meets and invitationals. All meets have a variety of skill level. All athletes can participate in every meet regular season meet.

  • The Mini-Meets: small meets put together with a few other teams. These meets are great for beginners and are a way to get in some competition earlier in the season.
  • Team Invitationals: larger meets with many teams throughout the Bay Area, Sacramento Area, and Modesto Area.

Uniform Kits

Each athlete will receive a team t-shirt with registration. Uniform kits must be purchased. You can purchase it during registration or at any point in the season. The kit includes:

  • Compression singlet and shorts
  • Warm-up pants and jacket
  • Team Socks
  • Backpack

FEES

The registration fees cover cost of regular season meets, team dinner, equipment, facility rentals, and coaches stipend.

FINANCIAL AID

Our goal is to make sport accessible to all, regardless of cost. If you are in need of financial aid, please fill out this form by December 31, 2024.

Extra Costs

Athletes and their families are responsible for purchasing a uniform, travel expenses, and Championship meet costs. There is also an additional cost for AAU and USATF membership.

Memberships

Athletes will need to get AAU and USATF memberships to compete in certain meets.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many practices must I attend?

All athletes must attend two practices per week. This allows for speed and endurance to develop.

Do I have to run in meets?

The only required meet is the one put on by the Cubs and the NorCal Championship Meet. However, attending meets allows coaches to see improvement and provides actual racing times to help develop practices for each athlete.

Is volunteering required?

All families must volunteer 10 hours per season or they can pay the opt-out fee of $100.

My child has never participated in running, can they join the team?

Most athletes do not have any formal running training before joining the team. Athletes will be placed in groups based on age and ability.

Who can run in meets?

All athletes can run in meets. The meets are a fun way to bond with the team and cheer one another on. There will be all different levels and abilities in every meet.

What events can kids participate in?

We have athletes participate in a variety of events, including sprints, mid-distance, distance, and field-events. We also train athletes in Racewalk. Events can include the 100m, 200m, 100m hurdles, 200m hurdles, 400m, 400m hurdles, 800m, 1500m, 3000m, 1500mRW, 300mRW, shot put, discus, high jump, long jump, javelin, and triple jump.

The Track and Field Program aims to create a safe and supportive environment for athletes to learn and compete. It also aims to promote physical fitness, integrity and healthy competition.

Track and field events include running, jumping, and throwing events. Running events include sprints, middle-distance, and long-distance races, as well as hurdling and racewalking. Jumping events include the high jump and long jump. Throwing events include the shot put, discus, hammer, and javelin.
